Tips for Scholarships

Most scholarships are based on one or more of the following:

 

I hope this site makes it easier for you to find scholarships that you qualify for, and to access  the applications.  If you click on the highlighted scholarships you will find a printable application which can be copied to a word document, filled out, then copied and submitted to my office, or simply copied, filled out by hand and delivered by the due date.  The other scholarship applications can be picked up at my office.

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM

This program is sponsored by your local Coca-Cola bottler and the Coca-Cola Company.  The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is a public nonprofit foundation and the largest business supported scholarship fund of its kind.  Program awards consist of 50 scholarships worth $5000 annually and 100 scholarships worth $1000 annually, all renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.  These awards may be used at any accredited U.S. college or university of the student’s choice.  Selection will be based on a number of factors, with special emphasis on the character, personal merit, and background of each individual.  Applications can be found out www.coca-colascholars.org

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD

Students grades 5-12 are eligible for this award.  You must be a volunteer in the community and have performed at least in part after September 1st.  Employees of NASSP, CSFA, Prudential or its affiliates their children or previous national award recipients are not qualified.  Applications can be picked up from Mrs. Pratt

VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS/VOICE OF DEMOCRACY SCHOLARSHIP  

Voice of Democracy is a broadcast scriptwriting scholarship program with over 137,000 students participating from schools in each of our 50 states, D.C., Europe and Pacific Areas.  To enter the competition a student must write and then record a short three to five minute script covering the theme chosen for the current year.  The competition is open to 10th, 11th, & 12th grade students.  Scholarships of up to $1000 are awarded.

DAUGHTER'S OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

This scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who has qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism.  The awards range from $100 to $2000.

PRINCIPAL'S LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Principal’s Leadership Award program will award 150 scholarships of $1000 each nationwide.  Only one senior per school may be nominated.  The Nominees should be in the top 20% of their senior class and demonstrate leadership.  Selection is not based on financial need.

SOIL/WATER CONSERVATION SPEECH CONTEST 

The topic for this speech contest is varied each year.  Any boy or girl attending high school, grades 9-12, is eligible to participate.  Awards of $25 - $900 are available.

TARGET ALL-AROUND SCHOLARSHIP 

The Target All-Around Scholarship was designed to commend those students who strive to achieve excellence in their schools and in communities by volunteering their time and talents to those in need.  You must be a high school senior or current college student and must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study.  Four $10,000 and over 2,000 $1000 scholarships will be awarded.  Scholarships need to be picked up from a local Target store.

AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP 

The AXA Achievement Scholarship Program offers college scholarship of $10,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school.  The applicants must be current high school seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States. 

BURGER KING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Burger King Restaurants will be rewarding a number of $1000 scholarships to qualifying students throughout South Dakota.   Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 hours per month (unless individual circumstances such as physical disability or an ill family member prevents the student’s employment).  They must demonstrate participation in extra curricular high school sponsored activities.  Must obtain written recommendations/signatures from a school official and employer.  Demonstrates financial need.  Schools are allowed to nominate on high school senior from Beresford High School that meets these eligibility requirements.  Visit www.sms.scholarshipamerican.org/bkscholars.

 

PHCC EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship is intended for those students who wish to have a career in the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling industry.  You must be sponsored by a SDAPHCC member and the applicants must be a senior in high school or a freshman in college.  One scholarship in the amount of $500 and one for $1,000 will be awarded.

SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS

A program of scholarships for the study of engineering - This program provides direct tuition grants to outstanding students pursuing engineering degrees. To be eligible you must be a citizen of the United States be a high school junior or senior, have at least a 3.5 grade point average and meet minimum requirements with regard to SAT or ACT scores as outlined in the individual requirements of the scholarship. A total of 29 SAE Engineering Scholarships will be available to college freshmen. Awards from $500-$6,000 will be given.

TOM STEELE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Student Loan Finance Corporation has established a scholarship program to assist high school seniors throughout South Dakota and employees’ children who plan to continue education in college or vocational school programs.  There will be up to 220 $1000 awards granted each year.  Criteria for this scholarship will be based on academics and involvement.

AMERICAN LEGION ORATORICAL CONTEST 

Each year the American Legion sponsors a nationwide speech contest, offering high school students the chance to win scholarships for education beyond high school. Each contestant must give a prepared oration on some phase of the United States Constitution, giving emphasis to the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to his government. Awards ranging from $100 to $600 will be awarded.

DISCOVER CARD TRIBUTE AWARD

The Tribute Award Program consists of State and National scholarship awards.  Nine will be given in each of the 50 states, D.C. and the U.S. Territories/American schools abroad. The scholarships range from $500 $20,000. Applicant must be a current high school junior who is planning to continue his or her education at a vocational/technical school, in arts and humanities studies or in other studies at a degree conferring college or university.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION 

Financial need, leadership, and scholarship are the criteria by which applicants are judged. Application must be made on the official form provided by the Elks National Foundation. Awards up to $5000 will be given.

MENSA EDUCATION & RESEARCH FOUNDATION 

This scholarship is based on an essay which describes the applicant's career, vocational, or academic goal. Awards of $200 to $1,000 will be given.

MINNESOTA-DAKOTAS KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP 

(Joseph E. Messer) Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. The applicant must be a legal resident of Minnesota or the Dakotas, and be a graduating senior from a four year high school. Scholarships of $1000 or more will be based on scholastic ability, need and seriousness of purpose.

UNITED STATES JCI SENATE FOUNDATION

Ten - $1000 grants will be awarded to graduating high school seniors in the United States who plan to continue their education.  Eligibility will be based on need, leadership and academic success.

VIETNAM ERA VETERANS REUNION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 

Students in the 11th and 12th grade, who are now living and enrolled in a South Dakota high school and are dependents of a South Dakota Vietnam Veteran, whether the veteran be living or deceased, are eligible for this award. All participants must prepare a thesis. A personal history form must accompany the thesis. Awards range from $500-$2000

WAL-MART SCHOLARSHIP 

Your local Wal-Mart store will be awarding a $1000 scholarship to an area graduating senior. The award will be based on the student's scholastic and academic achievements, extra-curricular, work activities and financial need.

WELLS FARGO BANK COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Wells Fargo Banks are committed to providing opportunities for our community's youth, and to the institutions of higher education who help our youth learn and grow. Norwest Banks will award sixty-two, $1,000 scholarships equally to female and male high school seniors. Recipients must use the scholarship to attend an institution of higher learning inside South Dakota. They must attend a high school located in a Wells Fargo Bank community at the time of their application. They must exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills, and participate in extra-curricular activities.

AAA TRAVEL

The AAA Travel High School Challenge modeled after the AAA/Ford Auto Skills competition and travel industry educator Marc Mancini’s Geography Bowl, is available to students in grades 9 – 12.  This educational challenge features three exciting levels of competition with $156,000 in college scholarship awards from the Hogan Family Foundation.  For more information see aaa.com/TravelChallenge.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY COLLEGE/VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP 

The South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary shall award annually two $500 college scholarships and two $500 vocational scholarship to assist Veteran’s children or auxiliary member’s children to secure an education beyond the high school level

American Legion auxiliary Scholarship/Lois Halberg Nurse’s Scholarship

Three nurse’s scholarships in the amount of $2100 each will be awarded to assist veteran’s or Auxiliary members’ children or grandchildren to secure an education beyond the high school level.  This scholarship is available to any boy or girl who is a resident of the state of South Dakota, graduating from an accredited school whose sole interest is a career in nursing

ANNIS IRENE FOWLER/KADEN 

This scholarship provides support for young women or men who have dedicated themselves to becoming professional educators. The scholarship is awarded to a freshman entering a South Dakota university who has demonstrated outstanding academic abilities. The student must apply to a South Dakota university granting degrees in elementary and secondary education, two letters of recommendation, an original essay, and ACT test results will be considered in choosing a winner. The award is $1000.

ARDELL BJUGSTAD SCHOLARSHIP 

The Ardell Bjugstad Scholarship Program for Native American Students will award a $500 scholarship to a high school graduate who is an enrolled member of a federally recognized Indian tribe located in South or North Dakota and plans to enter a post-secondary institution pursuing studies in agribusiness, agricultural production, agricultural sciences or a natural resources degree.

ASTHMA ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP 

All high school seniors with asthma who have achieved both excellence in competitive sports and a superior high school academic record are eligible. Ten scholarships in the amount of $3500 will be awarded.

ESA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP 

Scholarships from $500 to $1000 will be awarded to a student who shows excellent character, leadership, scholastic ability, and financial need.  The applicant must have maintained a minimum of a 3.0 GPA or a minimum score on the ACT of 20 or 950 on the SAT.

MARION T. WOOD SCHOLARSHIP 

The South Dakota Association of Educational Office of Professionals sponsors a $200 scholarship each year.  This scholarship will go to a senior who pursues a degree in education.  The applicant must have completed two or more business education courses.

NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION SCHOLARSHIP  

This senior must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be pursuing a degree at a college or vocational school.  They must demonstrate ability as a leader, have some community involvement, be active in school activities and have and must support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports.  Scholarships range from $250 locally to $5,000 nationally.

PIMCO

The applicant must be a graduating South Dakota high school senior, with a minimum ACT score of 27, and participating in a Regent Scholar curriculum.  Student must be continuing their education at a 2 or 4 year accredited institution located in South Dakota.  This is a $2000 per year, renewable up to $8,000 Scholarship.

SCHOLAR ATHLETE MILK MUSTACHE OF THE YEAR (SAMMY) 

This is an opportunity for students in grades 9-12 to apply for a $7500 scholarship. Selection for the scholarship will be based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership and community service. You must request an application several weeks before the application due date.

THELMA FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP 

One scholarship in the amount of $300 will be awarded each year. Candidates for this award shall be junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary. Completed application must be sent to the State Education Chairman

YANKTON COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships in the amount of $1500 will be awarded to applicants seeking a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college.  Preference points will be given to applicants who have a family relationship to Yankton College alumni or former YC faculty or staff.  However anyone can apply.

CHEVROLET - MICHELLE KWAM R.E.W.A.R.D.S. SCHOLARSHIP 

To be eligible for this $5000 scholarship payable over four years you must be a female currently completing her senior year of high school with sufficient credit to graduate in the spring term.  You must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and have demonstrated both academic and athletic excellence through school teams, intramural activities, organized athletic clubs or other community-based sports organizations.  You must  continue to be involved in athletics at the college level.

CONSERVATION SPEECH CONTEST

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Division of Resource Conservation and Forestry will sponsor a speech contest for students, grades 9-12.  Any student enrolled in a South Dakota High School is eligible to compete for $1200 in scholarships.

FRED AND MARIE CHRISTOPHERSON SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship is for a South Dakota graduating high school senior who is planning to attend a South Dakota four-year academic college or university. Selection is based on demonstrated academic excellence. The award is $2,500.

JOE FOSS, AN AMERICAN HERO SCHOLARSHIP 

This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who graduates from a South Dakota accredited high school and who will be attending an institution of higher learning who has a GPA of at least 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 21 and who possess characteristics of an American patriot.

KARST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

This award will be presented to a senior who will graduate from a South Dakota High School in the upper 50% of the class. The recipient must be going into an agricultural related field qualify for the $200 scholarship.

LES ROSE MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP 

This $1000 scholarship recipient should be an instrumentalist who plans on furthering his education regardless of their major. Preference will be given to students who plan to further their education in music, particularly brass players and have demonstrated exceptional talent.

LEWIS J. MENZEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship ($500) will be awarded to a outstanding senior who is a resident of South Dakota, has a GPA of 2.5 or above, and been accepted to a four year college. Citizenship and extra-curricular involvement are important. Financial need will be considered.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES SCHOLARSHIP

The applicant must be a high school senior in Minnesota or North or South Dakota. They must be planning to attend a college or university in the upcoming semester. Minimum SAT of 850 or 19 ACT and a 3.0 GPA are required. Participation in extra- curricular activities is a must as well as 45 hours of community service during the course of the academic school year.

SKIRBALL INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP

Students enrolled in grades 10-12 may enter the Skirball Institute National High School Essay Contest. Prizes range from $100 to $5000.

SOUTH DAKOTA AMATEUR SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIP 

The SDASA Program has been established to award scholarships to participants and /or family members in the SDASA program, who desire to further their education.  These family members must have participated in the SDASA program for at least 3 years; as a player coach, umpire, SDASA official, or league official. Applicants must be 19 years of age or younger and be a graduating senior from an accredited South Dakota high school during the year of application.

SOUTH DAKOTA MANUFACTURED HOUSING ASSOCIATION 

This is a state wide program that is open to all juniors and seniors. Applicants are to write an essay on the topic of, “How have the trailer houses of yesterday changed to the manufactured homes of today?” Scholarships for $250-$500 will be awarded.

 

April

ANTHEM 

This is an essay contest based on Ayn Rand's novel, "Anthem."  This contest is open to freshmen and sophomores.  Awards range from $100-1000.

AYN RAND

This is an essay contest on Ayn Rand's novel, "The Fountainhead."  This contest is open to high school juniors and seniors and will be judged on both style and content.  Awards range from $500-5000.

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship has been made available to graduating seniors whose mother or grandmother is a member of Catholic Daughters.  The application requires a short synopsis of your future plans.  The scholarship is worth $100.

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA EDUCATION INCENTIVE GRANT 

One $500 scholarship will be presented to a South Dakota graduate. The student must be going into the field of education.

PLAINS COMMERCE BANK 

This scholarship will be available to  graduating high school seniors who attend an accredited South Dakota college, vocational school, or community college on a full time basis.  The student or their parent must be a customer of Plains Commerce Bank.

PREMIER BANK SCHOLARSHIP 

First Premier Bank is offering ten $1000.00 scholarships to students who are customers of the bank or his parents are a customer. The student can be attending any school of higher education.

RELIABANK DAKOTA SCHOLARSHIP  

Scholarships will be awarded to a high school senior who will be attending a 4 year college or university.  One scholarship for $1000 will be given to a student attending a South Dakota School and $500 to a student attending any accredited school.  The applicant must be a customer of Reliabank.

SCOTTISH RITE BOOK GRANT

A Grant in the amount of $100 will be awarded to South Dakota students who plan to attend a school of higher education in the state of South Dakota.

SOUTH DAKOTA FARMERS UNION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM  

The South Dakota Farmers Union is proud to announce the availability of scholarship money for applicants whose parents are members of the SD Farmers Union.  Awards of $100-200 will be made to qualified high school graduate or college student.  Awards will be based on ACT scores and transcript of grades.

south Dakota Retailers Association 

The applicant for this scholarship must be enrolled in a retail-related course of study at a vocational technical school, or as a student at a college or university in any field of study relating to a career in the retail industry at the time of application and during the actual disbursement of the award.  Example of areas of study considered to be retail-related may include:  Agribusiness, Apparel Merchandising, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, Business Administration, Business Management, Computer Management, Landscape Design, Pharmacy, Printing Industries, Refrigeration, Sale/Marketing Management and Tourism Industry Management.

World War II Retired Teacher’s Memorial Scholarship

One graduating senior in South Dakota will be awarded a $500 scholarship to be used to continue his education at an institute located in the State of South Dakota.  The applicant must be a grandchild/great grandchild of a World War II veteran.

WORLD WAR II VETERAN’S MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship was endowed by Fern and Darwin Williams who attended Watertown Senior High.  It is a memorial to those who gave their lives in World War II.   Financial need is consideration for selection.  Need is defined as absence of family or inability of a family or guardian to provide financial assistance for school related expense.  The award is for $1000.

ROBERT C. BYRD HONORS SCHOLARSHIP

This is a federally-funded program to promote student excellence and achievement and to recognize exceptional students who show promise of continued excellence. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding high school seniors for the first year of study at an institution of higher education. Scholarships of $1,500 will be awarded. Students may attend any eligible in-state or out-of-state institution of higher education but must complete one year of study. Applicant must have a GPA of 3.5 and ACT score of 24 and above.

South Dakota Vocational Association 

The applicant for this scholarship must be applying or accepted by a post high school program at any South Dakota technical institute or a vocational educator program at a South Dakota University.

Junior golf foundation

The South Dakota Junior Golf Foundation will be offering four $1000 scholarships to applicants who have domiciled in the state of South Dakota for a minimum of two years, and plan to attend a four year South Dakota college, university or accredited post high school institution during the upcoming fall semester.  The applicant will be determined by attested past performance at their golf club, diligence, cooperation, willingness to work, high school academic achievement leadership qualities, honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, financial need.  Golf ability will be a low consideration.

ROTC/ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships are available from all branches of the service, Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. It is recommended that you start the application process at the end of your junior year. Please see me if you are interested in receiving more information or visiting with a representative.

SOUTH DAKOTA OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP 

The South Dakota Legislature authorized the Regents Scholarship Program to allow South Dakota’s most academically accomplished high school graduates to receive an affordable education at any university, college, or technical school in South Dakota that is accredited by the North Central Association.  This scholarship provides $5,000 over four years to a qualifying student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota.  You must be a resident of South Dakota at the time of high school graduation, have an ACT composite score of 24 or higher or and SAT of 1070 or higher, must complete the course requirements of the Regents Scholars curriculum with no final grade below a C, and have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  The Regents Scholar curriculum is as follows:  4 units of English, 3 units of social studies, 4 units of algebra or higher mathematics, 4 units of science, ½ unit of computer science, ½ unit of fine arts and 2 units of the same modern or classical language.
